Portugal is reached through Spain, which makes it the longest single drive of the four and the route where sharing a vehicle is most common. It is also the most forgiving of the four for an ordinary household: the access is generally better than Italy, the roads are good, and the paperwork behaves provided it is done in order.

The route out of the county
M3 or A34 to the M25, round to the M20 and the Eurotunnel shuttle from Folkestone. It is a long way, and the shuttle earns its place here mainly by preserving the driver's hours for the drive that follows.
Down through France on the A26, A10 and A63 to the border at Irún, then across northern Spain. For Porto and the north, the A-52 and A-55 through Vigo. For Lisbon and the Algarve the route runs south through Salamanca and crosses at Vilar Formoso, or further south via Badajoz towards the A6 and Lisbon, then the A2 down to the Algarve.

The gap, and the doorways
Portugal is the route where the holding period matters most. Algarve purchases run late with striking regularity, and the gap between leaving a Hampshire house and collecting keys in Portugal is routinely a real one rather than a theoretical risk. That is exactly what listed, held storage is for: collect on the date that is fixed, hold, and ship when the far end is genuine.
The certificate of baggage is the document people most often leave too late, and it is the one that stops a load at the border. Start it as soon as you have a NIF.
On furniture, the Portuguese pattern will be familiar to anyone leaving a period Hampshire property: older Algarve and Alentejo houses have thick walls, small windows and doors that were not designed around modern sofas. Yes — there is no other overland way. It makes this the longest drive of the four routes, which is why part-loads and consolidated vehicles are so common on it.
02 What is the certificate of baggage and who obtains it?
A Portuguese document confirming the goods are your used personal effects accompanying a change of residence. The application is yours to make. Our part is making sure the inventory and the certificate describe the same consignment.
03 Can you store our things while the Algarve purchase completes?
Yes, and on this route it is close to standard. Goods are collected in Hampshire, listed and held, and the export file is built against that same inventory once completion is real.
04 Will a sofa from an English house fit an Algarve villa?
Sometimes not, and it is far cheaper to discover that at the viewing than at the door. Measure the entrance, the turn and the stairs, send us the numbers, and we will tell you honestly whether it goes.
05 Do you cover Madeira or the Azores?
Those are sea-freight questions rather than road ones and are handled differently from the mainland. Ask, and we will say plainly whether we can help or whether a specialist would serve you better.
06 Are electricals worth taking?
Portugal runs the same voltage and plug standard as most of continental Europe, so UK appliances need adaptors and some do not appreciate the change. Big white goods rarely justify the freight, and we would rather tell you that than invoice you for carrying a fridge the length of the continent.
